BMI for Indian Women — Different from Western Standards

Indian health authorities and research studies recommend lower BMI cutoffs for Indians compared to western populations. While WHO defines overweight as BMI 25+, Indian guidelines consider BMI 23 as overweight and BMI 25 as obese for Indian women. This is because South Asians have higher visceral fat (belly fat around organs) at lower BMI values, increasing risk of diabetes and heart disease.

The ideal BMI range for Indian women is 18.5–22.9. This means ideal weight for a 5-feet-4-inch woman (162 cm) is 49–60 kg. For a 5-feet-2-inch woman (157 cm) ideal weight is 45–57 kg. These are guidelines — your build, muscle mass and overall health matter more than any single number.

BMI and PCOS, Thyroid in Indian Women

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) affects 1 in 5 Indian women and makes weight management harder due to insulin resistance. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is also more common in Indian women and causes weight gain even with normal eating. If your BMI is high despite eating well and exercising, get your thyroid (TSH, T3, T4) and insulin levels checked.
